and school staff performance. |

Construction
of new school building in Shaheed Nagar
Construction on new school building begun on 10th July
2006. The ongoing expansion of the school is to accommodate
a waiting list of 120 children. |

Shaheed Nagar
CommunitiWorks promotes a holistic approach in which we integrate
different activities but retain a common goal. These activities
can include methods ranging from micro-credit to health awareness
campaigns to cooperatives.
Our pilot project in Shaheed Nagar, District Ghaziabad , Uttar
Pradesh, includes the following activities:
- A school for 3-9 years old and 1st Grade; we are currently
expanding into the 2 nd Grade;
- A teacher training program for men and women in the program; they teach at the school for a minimum period of three years.
- A women’s cooperative for the mothers of the children attending the school;
- A production center run by the cooperative that advertises their skills and eliminates middlemen. The center manages orders from local traders for hand embroidery, quilt making, chain making and seasonal orders such a candle making.
- A grocery store run by the cooperative as an income generating activity and a service to the community;
- A health program financed by the cooperative;
- Health initiatives including regular check-ups and immunization of the students in the school, and health programs to combat anemia and to promote family planning.
- A Vocational Training Center for unemployed youths of the area that includes classes in computer skills and stitching and sewing.
In addition, community leaders make a commitment to develop roads
and sanitation as well as housing conditions.
