Crayons – the school
Pre Nursery education for 120 children ages 3 to 9 years old
- The average monthly attendance levels rose from 58% in Jan 2004 to 81% in June 2006.
- The dropout rate is nil and in fact the school has attracted children from families who are not members of the cooperative. There is an ongoing to expansion of the school to accommodate a waiting list of 120 children.
- All children have learned to read and write Hindi and English and basic arithmetic and the vast majority of these children have progressed to the next level.
- The children's participation skills in the classroom's
activities have improved from poor to average and good (based
on the evaluation done by experts).
- The exam scores and their health and physical activities have improved from poor to average and good.
- All children follow an immunization schedule.
- Every month a doctor visits the school to record weight height and illness frequency.
- The children's health has improved because of balanced and nutritious meals provided at the school.
- All children come to school neat and clean, and their hygiene and appearance has improved over time.
- The children have learned to take pride in attending school.
- The school has also promoted the community's involvement through parents' participation in the school's activities.
The Women’s Cooperative
- In the past 3 years the Cooperative's members -a group of 25 women- have acquired stronger skills through regular training and monitoring;
- Through supervision and facilitation coordinated by CommunitiWorks, the members have achieved greater independence and confidence in managing their enterprise and in securing orders for the cooperative;
- They have established a democratic system of consultation and participation in decision making and have selected three leaders among themselves to implement any decisions;
- Since the cooperative started, all 25 women previously unable to write can now sign their own name and continue to improve their literacy skills
Production center
- All orders are being executed under strict quality control;
- The production center provides income to 14 women every month;
- The production center also contributes to bringing work to women in the community who are not members of the cooperative.
Grocery store
- The grocery store is sustainable financially;
- The grocery store provides quality, hygienic products at a very competitive price;
- The grocery store provides income to 5 women every month;
- The grocery store provides logistical support to the school such as the supplies for the school meals at competitive prices, bringing down the school's running costs.
Telephone booth
- The telephone booth serves the community by offering local calls and STD call services at a very fair price.
- The telephone booth provides an income to one woman from the cooperative.
The Training Program
- The Women's cooperative has supported a traditionally trained birth attendant in obtaining a fully recognized qualification in midwifery. As a result, the local community has benefited from improved maternal and post-natal health and the number of home visits to assist at birth has increased significantly from an average of 60 per month at the beginning of 2005 to an average of 85 per month to date. The Women's Collective is currently funding a woman's training in pasteurizing with the aim of enabling her to open a dairy.
- The vocational training center currently has an enrollment of 62 young men and women. We are looking to expand the number of classes we offer and provide more information on job placement.
